In an exclusive interview with APAC Entrepreneur, the distinguished entrepreneur shared his fascinating entrepreneurial journey.

Japan’s influence on the global gaming industry is undeniable. From the arcade era of the 1980s to today’s console and digital experiences, Japanese creators have consistently set benchmarks for creativity, technical excellence, and immersive design. Having spent years working within Japan’s game development ecosystem, Atsushi Yoshimeki saw both sides of that legacy up close— its strengths as well as its limitations.
He observed a significant risk in the traditional Japanese development model: it is often overly inward-looking, with projects managed almost exclusively by domestic teams. Amid Japan’s current economic stagnation, this structural approach limited the global visibility of its creators. While the country possesses an incredible wealth of creative talent capable of competing at the highest levels, much of that potential continues to remain unseen on the global stage.
Seeking to bridge this gap and strengthen Japan’s presence in the global gaming landscape, Yoshimeki co-founded MEC Labo Inc. with his wife and long-time creative partner, Yuen Yoshimeki. Established in 2024 in Tokyo, MEC Labo was conceived not simply as another game studio, but as a globally oriented platform—one designed to connect Japanese creative and technical expertise with international markets. The studio provides high-end creative engineering services spanning UI/UX, 2D and 3D art, and animation, supporting projects that demand both technical precision and creative depth. “Our mission is to liberate Japanese creativity from domestic constraints and showcase it to the world through a globally-oriented development structure. By combining our deep industry roots with a broader international perspective, we aim to create a new paradigm for Japanese game studios,” shares Yoshimeki.
At the heart of MEC Labo Inc.’s broad capabilities lies the complementary expertise of its two founders. As Game Director, Atsushi Yoshimeki brings a wealth of knowledge in game design and blockchain technology, shaped by years of working on large-scale productions. Complementing this, Co-founder and Art Director, Yuen Yoshimeki, possesses comprehensive experience across all facets of game design, including 2D and 3D art, animation, and UI/UX. This dual-core leadership enables MEC Labo to structure its operations with precision and flexibility, ensuring seamless integration across creative and technical disciplines. “Unlike many studios that must outsource various components, we maintain the internal capacity to handle everything from initial concept and blockchain integration to final artistic execution. This integrated approach ensures that the creative vision remains consistent throughout the development process,” explains Yoshimeki.
Beyond this complementary leadership, MEC Labo’s operational strength also comes from a carefully designed approach to team-building. The studio custom-builds teams for each project, aligning their skill sets closely with the creative intent and production needs to ensure high-quality output. “This ability to provide end-to-end, high-level creative solutions is the primary competitive advantage that allows us to manage such a diverse range of services effectively while meeting the complex demands of our global clients,” adds Yoshimeki.
MEC Labo also stands out in the industry for its thoughtful adoption of generative AI. While many studios remain cautious about generative AI, often held back by concerns around copyright exposure and reputational risk, MEC Labo has taken a proactive yet highly disciplined approach. Rather than relying on open, third-party platforms, the studio has developed a proprietary AI model trained solely on assets created by its own in-house illustrators. This system operates within a secure, local environment, ensuring that all design resources remain protected, controlled, and fully owned by the studio. “We do not view AI as a tool for creating original concepts from scratch; rather, we define it as a ‘highly capable assistant.’ We utilize AI primarily to automate labor-intensive tasks and to assist in the mass production of design variations, allowing our human creators to focus on the high-level conceptual work that requires true originality,” emphasizes Yoshimeki.
MEC Labo ensures technical and legal clarity around its AI-generated output, maximizing production efficiency without compromising intellectual property or creative integrity. This measured approach allows it to stay at the forefront of technological innovation while maintaining the highest professional and ethical standards in design.
Although MEC Labo’s global talent development initiatives are still in their early stages, they remain central to the studio’s long-term mission. As outlined in its founding philosophy, these efforts are the essential catalyst for the systemic change the company seeks to bring about in Japan’s creative industry. Japan is home to exceptionally skilled craftsmen within the gaming industry. However, language barriers, particularly the challenge of operating in English, often limit their ability to engage fully with the global market, leaving them isolated from broader international trends. MEC Labo aims to address this gap by bringing together the delicate, precise game design sensibilities of Japanese creators with the dynamic and diverse perspectives of global talent. “We believe that the intersection of these different cultural and creative approaches will lead to innovative solutions and gaming experiences that have never been seen before. Our goal is to build a platform where language is no longer a hindrance to creativity,” says Yoshimeki.
Through cross-cultural collaboration, MEC Labo seeks to create a synergistic environment in which Japanese technical excellence and global market insights strengthen one another. “This mission is not just about expanding our team; it is about evolving the entire creative output of our studio to resonate with a truly universal audience,” adds Yoshimeki.
Since its founding, MEC Labo’s journey has been shaped by several notable achievements and milestones. A particularly significant moment was its participation in TOKEN2049 in Singapore. Yoshimeki describes the event as a turning point, a catalyst that brought together professional relationships the team had been building over time, while opening the door to new global conversations. The insights gained and the international connections formed during this period laid the groundwork for a major new project the studio is preparing to launch in 2026.
Navigating the scale and complexity of this initiative required extensive negotiation and adaptation, yet throughout the process, MEC Labo remained anchored to a single guiding principle: ‘working with integrity.’ In an industry marked by rapid change, Yoshimeki believes that long-term success is built on trust, earned through consistency, reliability, and a commitment to quality. “This milestone was not just about business networking; it was a realization of our company values in action. We are now pouring all our effort into the success of this upcoming project, which stands as a testament to how integrity and a global vision can transform a studio’s trajectory,” he affirms.
MEC Labo was selected as a JAPAN HUB member at TOKEN2049 Singapore, and Yoshimeki was later invited to speak at AI BB 2025 winter, acknowledgements that underscored the studio’s emerging role within global conversations around game development and creative technology.
Looking ahead, Yoshimeki sees MEC Labo evolving into a premier global game studio that reflects the very best of Japanese innovation. “Our primary objective is to create a future where Japanese creators are recognized, valued, and celebrated in every major market worldwide,” he opines.
However, the legacy he hopes to leave extends beyond commercial triumphs or industry accolades. He is determined to prove that extraordinary games can be created from anywhere in the world, provided there is genuine passion and technical skill. Driven by this conviction, Yoshimeki has made it his mission to foster a new generation of “globally native” game creators who feel confident operating across cultures and international markets.
By empowering this generation with the right tools and opportunities needed to succeed on the world stage, MEC Labo aims to make a lasting contribution to the industry. “We want to be remembered as the studio that broke down geographic and linguistic barriers, proving that a commitment to excellence and a global mindset can redefine what is possible in the world of gaming and creative technology,” Yoshimeki concludes with quiet conviction.
