Born into a farming family in the small village of Takeo Province, Sareth’s early life was shaped by the simplicity of rural Cambodia. However, an innate curiosity and a love for connecting with people propelled him to seek a broader horizon. He moved to Siem Reap right after high school and continued his education, eventually earning a master’s degree in public and business administration. Sareth began his career in the tourism industry in 1997, a tumultuous time in Cambodia’s history marked by political conflict.  His passion for sharing Cambodia’s rich heritage and his knack for communication led him to join a local company and take care of European travelers. At the same time, he was trained as an English-speaking guide. However, his dedication and natural affinity for hospitality soon caught the attention of a Swiss-owned company expanding its operations in Cambodia. Embracing this new opportunity, Sareth spent 16 transformative years with the Swiss firm where he honed his skills. He learned to blend the rich narratives of Cambodia’s history with the impeccable quality expected by international travelers, particularly those from Europe and Asia. Over the years, he became adept at delivering top-notch services, combining Cambodian cultural richness with Swiss precision. This unique fusion created memorable experiences for tourists, showcasing Cambodia’s beauty and history through the lens of unparalleled quality and service.

The Beginning of Angkor Destination Travel

At first, Sareth didn’t set out to be a business owner or manager. His initial goal was simply to find a stable job that would support his family and secure a future for the next generation. However, as he interacted with people from around the globe, his perspective began to shift. He realized that Cambodia lacked the resources and expertise to offer authentic experiences to international visitors, particularly from European countries who traveled thousands of miles to explore the country. This realization sparked a desire in him to bridge that gap and provide genuine experiences that would showcase the true essence of Cambodia to the world. Beyond merely enhancing the visitor experience, Sareth saw an opportunity to inspire future generations while fostering a sustainable ecosystem within the community that would offer more jobs and support local families. In 2013, fueled by this newfound vision, Sareth took a bold leap and established his own company, Angkor Destination Travel, a pioneering inbound tour operator in Cambodia. Though launching a business posed numerous challenges, from financial management to team coordination, it also presented opportunities for local youth, fostering prosperity and growth. Beyond mere business success, Angkor Destination is dedicated to creating enduring impacts through community support and charitable initiatives. The company is deeply committed to assisting young rural Cambodians in realizing their dreams of higher education. Through sponsorship programs, these students are empowered to continue their studies, garnering widespread community support and acclaim over the years.“We don’t care how much we have, but how much we can share,” opines Sareth.

While many often conflate leadership and entrepreneurship, Sareth offers a fresh perspective. In his view, leadership and entrepreneurship, though related, are distinct concepts that require different mindsets and approaches. A leader needs to be emotionally resilient, daring, committed, and capable of weathering all storms. On the other hand, an entrepreneur is focused on building a sustainable business model that benefits not just the company, but the environment, society, and culture as well. According to Sareth, the modern-day entrepreneur needs to embrace the concept of “inclusive business,” where success is measured not just by financial gain but by the positive contributions made to the ecosystem and the economy as a whole. As a leader, he feels it’s imperative to lead by example, not just in words but in actions. “Merely stating directives is insufficient; one must embody the principles they espouse. A good leader demonstrates integrity by consistently doing what is right, setting a positive precedent for others to emulate,” he affirms.

Besides this, Sareth firmly believes in the power of discipline and grooming. He makes it a point to dress well for work every day, viewing it not merely as an outward appearance but as a tangible representation of the professional mindset and motivation he strives to embody. Additionally, Sareth is a strong advocate for sharing—not just material wealth but also thoughts, wisdom, and knowledge. Sareth believes that while luxury can be found anywhere, Cambodia offers something deeper—an enriching opportunity for travelers to truly immerse themselves in its culture and connect with its people. “Traveling and learning from diverse cultures truly inspires you and keeps you optimistic about life,” he adds. He admits the path is tough, but credits his ability to balance work and life to the unwavering support of his wife and family. “I love my job, my company, but I love my family the most,” he shares. This familial foundation, he believes, fuels his motivation and resilience, allowing him to tackle any obstacle without fear.

At work, Sareth emphasizes the importance of clear delegation and trust within his team. By assigning responsibilities clearly and ensuring each department knows its role, he creates an environment where his absence does not hinder the company’s operations. This effective delegation allows him to enjoy quality time with his family, planning his days without the constant worry of work. He measures success not just by the company’s achievements but by his own development and the well-being of his family and team. He firmly believes that Cambodia, with its inherent charm and hospitable people, will continue to attract tourists seeking unforgettable experiences. He plans to capitalize on Cambodia’s unique offerings by intensifying marketing efforts and actively participating in international tourism fairs to bolster the company’s global presence. Beyond financial success, Sareth aims to foster a culture of warmth and hospitality within his company. As a seasoned business leader, Sareth is deeply concerned about the prevailing mindset among young entrepreneurs, who often aspire to leap directly into leadership roles, bypassing the crucial early career stages where valuable lessons are learned hands-on. Drawing from his own journey through the trenches of various roles, Sareth emphasizes the indispensable value of starting from the ground up and gaining firsthand knowledge of business intricacies. He cautions that while ambition is necessary, it must be tempered with patience and practical experience to avoid costly mistakes.
